NFC Tag Series Programming an NFC Tag Part 8 – Using NFC for a quick Glympse

Have you ever heard of the Glympse app? I think it is time you got acquainted since the new NFC Task Launcher update just added compatibility with this app.

Glympse is a service that allows you to send your precise location in the map to anyone you want. There are different avenues where you can send the message to let them have a glimpse at where you are at.

The best part of the service is that it isn’t always on. You can set it to keep tracking you for a limited amount of time. Once the limit expires, people won’t be able to track you anymore. Pretty cool huh?

Normally, you would have to open the app and offer a Glympse manually. This normally takes time. What if you have a specific person who you routinely send a Glympse to? Maybe it is a loved one who is always worried about your safety, or maybe it is a parent that wants to make sure you are really where you say you are.

NFC Tags can help you automate the process by sending a quick Glympse to a set contact as soon as you tap the tag to your smartphone. Today, we will learn how to just that.

Preparation

The first thing you need to do is to download the Glypse app from the Play Store. The download link is right below for your convenience:

NFC Task launcher simply hooks up its services to this app like Tasker. You would still need the app if you want to send that Glypse to someone. The best part is that the other party doesn’t need the app to be able to view a Glypse. All they would need is an internet connection.

Programming the NFC Tag

Glympse 1After launching the NFC Task Launcher, tap on the plus icon on the upper right. Select “New Tag” from the Popup page.

Glympse 2From here, name the tag as you want. Maybe you can use the name of who you would be sending that Glypse to. Right now, I will set a Glypse that will go right to my boss because he wants to keep track of me when I am on the way to work. When you are done, tap on “Add actions”.

Glympse 3The Glypse settings can be found under the “Messages” Subsetting. Place a check mark on the “Send a Glypse” option and tap “Next” to proceed.

Glympse 4A popup message should appear giving you a list of parameters for your Glympse.

Glympse 5If you tap the setting that is currently set as “Email”, you can choose from a list of mediums you can use to send your Glympse. You can send it through email or SMS. You can also send it to your Twitter account for everyone to see or send it to your Facebook page so that your friends can see where you are.

Glympse 6To make it more personal and likely to be seen only by my boss, I would go ahead and send the message through SMS.

On the recipient box, simply place the contact number of who you would send the SMS to, or the email address of the person who you want to receive it. If you are planning to send it through your own Facebook and Twitter account, you don’t have to place anything in the recipient box.

You can also send an accompanying message along with your Glympse. For me, let me set it as “On my way to work”.

Glympse 7Finally, you can set the time limit of long you want to have that Glypse to be active. You can set it in hours or in minutes. Once you are done, click Ok and you should be back to the main task page where you will see the “Send a Glypse” action listed down.

Glympse 8Add any other tasks as you prefer, but for now, I will go ahead and save and write this task.

2013-01-19 13.35.47From here, simply tap the NFC Tag to the NFC Chip on your device to program the task to your tag.

Testing the Tag

2013-01-19 13.45.12To test the tag, simply exit the Task Launcher and tap the tag again to your device. The app will quickly launch the Glypse App and place all the parameters we have set with no need for additional input.

On this screen, all you need to do to send someone your location is tap on the “send” button.

If you want your recipient to know your exact destination and estimated time of arrival, you can go ahead and choose the option for “Pick Destination” Before sending the Glypse.

There are plenty of uses for the ability to share your exact location to trusted viewers. It may even help you in an emergency where you may need to be traced in the event of an accident.
