How to Enable and Use Android Device Manager

One thing Android lacked for a long time is native mobile theft security. While we have been able to somehow mitigate this lack of theft security with 3rd party apps, there is nothing quite like a native, ROM based anti-theft solution. It seems that Google finally recognized that gaping hole in Android. They unveiled the Android Device Manager feature later this year, which is now one of the best perks of having a Google account synchronized with your Android device.

So what exactly is an Android Device Manager? It is a service that confirms one thing we knew all along – Google can easily track each and every smartphone by using the location data it sends to its servers. Rather than keeping all that data for themselves, Google finally decided to give back by letting us use this remote locating feature to our advantage. Not only can we find missing phones, we can now track stolen phones as long as it is connected to the internet.

Android Device Manager can do more than just track your phone on the map. It can also force the phone to ring as if there is a caller on the other end. This serves as a beacon that you can use to track the phone when you know it is nearby. All you have to do is home into the ringtone to find your phone.

In case you just can’t find it and you fear your data may be at risk, you can also remotely wipe your smartphone using Android device manager. Of course, that is on the extreme side. As long as there is still a good chance you can find your phone and recover it, you may want to put off wiping the phone completely.

Rather than wiping it, you can make use of a recent feature that Google added, which allows you to lock your phone with a password or a pin remotely. This is perfect for people who aren’t in the habit of locking their phones. This is also perfect for people who have lock codes, but are too simple to be effective.

How to Enable Android Device Manager

Now that you are acquainted with the many features of Android Device Manager, you most likely want this installed and activated as soon as possible. The best part is if you already have a Google account on your Android device, you already have this feature dormant within the phone. All you have to do is activate it.

There are two ways to go about activating Android Device Manager. First is through the native Settings app of your phone. All you have to do is go to settings and locate the Security settings.

Scroll down and look for the Device Administrators option.

From here, you will see the Android Device Manager with a blank check box. Just tap on the feature and you will be presented with the capabilities of the feature. Tap on Activate, and you should soon be able to remotely control your device.

Another way of activating Android Device Manager is by using the Google Settings app. When you open the app, there should be a setting at the bottom that says Android Device Manager. Tap that and it should bring you to the next screen where you can activate the two features of Android Device Manager – location tracking and remote control.
